Leave the Tyres and Tarmac gap if you have to wait behind a stationary car in traffic queues. As a general rule, try and leave a one metre gap between your car and any obstruction that you pass - a skip, or a parked car for example. If you have to shave obstructions through narrower gaps, reduce your speed as you pass. Anticipate things changing, like pedestrians stepping out, or cars moving off without signalling, or car doors opening, and be ready to stop if you need to. Leave a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front when travelling at speeds of over 40 mph.
If another vehicle is travelling too close behind you, increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front.
If another vehicle cuts in ahead of you, drop back and regain your safety gap.
Remember to leave more space behind the vehicle in front in adverse weather conditions. Check The Highway Code for more information on stopping distances.
