Case Study - Scenario

Jill drives to work and uses the same route every day. She normally works a nine hour day but sometimes works overtime in the evenings. She has found it hard to concentrate when driving at night.

One day the traffic is busier than normal, with road-works and a diversion. She is unfamiliar with this route and has difficulties with the tram service that runs across the roads. During the journey, she sounds her horn to warn other road-users of her presence, but notices it is not working.

Jill comes to a set of traffic lights at a busy junction, but they are not working.

When she is talking with her friends, she is surprised to find out that she gets better fuel-consumption than them.

1. How can Jill prepare herself to avoid getting tired when driving?

Select the BEST option below.

  • Eating a heavy meal
  • Taking plenty of rest
  • Ensuring the car is warm
  • Having music to listen to

2. When a tram approaches her car, what must Jill do?

Select the BEST option below

  • Speed up and overtake the tram
  • Sound the horn to alert the driver
  • Flash the headlights so the driver will see her
  • Avoid blocking the route

3. What should Jill do in relation to the tracks the trams run on?

Select the BEST option below

  • Follow them as they will help her to recognise her route
  • Avoid driving directly along the metal rails especially in wet weather
  • Use them to speed up progress through the busy traffic
  • Find an alternative route which is not busy with trams

4. When should Jill have noticed the horn was not working?

Select the BEST option below

  • During her daily check
  • When she last drove the car
  • When sounding her horn to warn another road-user
  • When reversing into a parking space

5 What is the main purpose of a daily walk-round check?

Select the BEST option below

  • That the car is roadworthy
  • That the car is clean
  • That the car is not dented
  • That the vehicle documentation is up to date

6 When traffic lights are not working, Jill needs to consider the following:

Select TWO of the options below

  • Treat as an unmarked junction
  • Turn around and find another route
  • She will have broken the law if she drives on and there is an accident
  • Follow closely behind the vehicle in front when crossing
  • Proceed as quickly as possible having checked there is nothing coming
  • Go when told to do so by another driver

7 A vehicle pulls out in front of Jill without warning. How should she react?

Select the BEST option below

  • Overtake as soon as possible
  • Stay calm and accept that it was a mistake
  • Flash her headlights to show her annoyance
  • Sound the horn and speed up

8 What might have been the reason that Jill uses less fuel than her friends?
