Joining and leaving from a slip road.Traffic on Dual Carriageways normally travels at 70 mph, although other speed limits can apply at any time, so it is very important to make sure you observe all signs on approach, and as you continue.

Planning ahead is essential to safety, so scan on the horizon, middle distance, and close up, and always be aware of what is going to happen.

Good use of the mirrors is important, as traffic can approach from behind very quickly. Things are constantly changing, so keep looking, keep anticipating, and keep concentrating.

Good hazard awareness will keep you safe, allow you to make correct decisions and be alert to what others are doing, or planning to do which will affect your judgement.

There are a few ways you can join a dual carriageway:

From a slip road

From a junction

From a roundabout

As a two-way road becomes a dual carriageway.

Different techniques will apply when using each method, but they all rely on good observation and positive decision-making.

The general rule is to keep in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.

If you have overtaken, move back to the left-hand lane as soon as it is safe to do so - don't stay in the right-hand lane unnecessarily. It is extremely dangerous!!

It as also very important to maintain progress on these roads, so you should drive at a speed that is generally similar to the rest of the traffic.

Keep a safe space around your car, and ensure the 2-second rule is applied at all times.

Be aware of other vehicles joining - you will have to manage your speed and space in these situations.

Plan your exit in good time so you don't have to make lane changes at the last minute.

Check The Highway Code for other rules on Dual Carriageways.
